Lighting refit to save Kuala Lumpur venue $82,000 a year

ASIA - The Kuala Lumpur Convention Centre is investing RM2m (US$658,000) to improve the lighting at its five exhibition halls.

The Kuala Lumpur Convention Centre offers 10,000sqm of exhibition space. Director of facilities Chen Soo Yoong, said replacing 900 metal halide lamps with LED bulbs could result in a saving of some 800,000 kWh per year, based on 5,000 hours of use per year for all five exhibition halls.

"Albeit varying electricity consumption monthly, depending on the number and type of events, the use of LED bulbs should see our electricity consumption dip to the 63 kWh to 70 kWh range, or 28 per cent from  the current energy usage," said Soo Yoong.

"This translates into a saving of around RM250,000 ($82,000) a year.

High-energy lamps, neon lights and other incandescent bulbs have been gradually replaced with energy-saving bulbs such as LEDs, compact fluorescent lamps (CFLs), cold cathode and T5 fluorescent lamps.

Last year  the Malaysian government revealed its ambitions to expand the number of exhibition centres in the country.
