Cancun appoints head of MICE

The Cancun Convention & Visitors Bureau has appointed Rocío González Jonguitud to the position of meetings industry director.

She has been working at the tourist board for six years and brings with her a wealth of conferences and exhibitions experience. Based in Cancun she will be working with partners and around the globe to promote Cancun’s MICE offering.

The appointment comes at a time when a multimillion pound renovation of the Cancun Center nears completion. Located in Cancun’s Hotel Zone, the centre began its operations in 2004 and has since positioned itself as the number one facility in the region for conferences, conventions and exhibitions of national and international stature.

The centre currently hosts more than 500 events each year and attracts more than 23,000 delegates.

Last month sterling hit an all-time high of 27.29 Pesos to the Pound, up more than a fifth on this time last year; in contrast the British currency is at a seven year low against the US Dollar. Jonguitud regards this as opportunity, for MICE delegates it is affordable to make the most of Cancun’s meetings facilities, accommodation, dining and entertainment.

With seven direct flights to Cancun a week, UK MICE planners can fly with British Airways or Virgin Atlantic from London Gatwick.
