Barcelona CC offsets carbon footprint

SPAIN - The Barcelona International Convention Centre (CCIB) has decided to offset its 2009 carbon emissions with the purchase of carbon credits.

The CCIB produced 98 tonnes of carbon equivalent in 2009, which it aims to offset completely.

The venue will also offer its clients the option of offsetting the carbon produced by events.

GM of the venue, Marc Rodriquez, says: “Nationally as well as internationally, leading companies are increasingly taking control of their corporate social responsibility. Consequently, and picking up on suggestions from many of our clients, we have decided to go a step further.”

The CCIB will offer corporations a preliminary calculation of the emissions their event will produce, as well as proposals to reduce and offset it through participation in international sustainable projects.

The carbon credits, recognised under the Kyoto protocol, come from the Monte Rosa Bagasse Cogeneration Project in Nicaragua.

Cogeneration is the use of heat produced as a by-product of the process of generating electricity, thereby increasing efficiency and reducing energy demand.
