Thieves escape in diamond show burglary

SWITZERLAND - Swiss authorities have reported that four diamonds worth millions of dollars have been stolen from global watch and jewellery show Baselworld.

“On Wednesday, 30 March 2011, one of the as yet still unidentified perpetrators distracted an employee of a diamond trader in the
exhibition hall and stole four diamonds worth millions from the display window,” said Markus Melzl, spokesman for Basel’s prosecutor’s office.

Although the exhibition closed for half an hour to prevent the thieves from escaping, Melzl said they apparently escaped with their loot.

Police are examining closed-circuit camera footage and looking for possible DNA traces and fingerprints.

Gems worth US$1m were reportedly stolen on the first day of UBM Asia’s Hong Kong International Jewellery and Gem Fair last September.
