Halifax chamber steps behind new CC

CANADA - The Halifax Chamber of Commerce has spoken out in support of the proposed new convention centre.

Halifax Mayor Peter Kelly and Nova Scotia Premier Rodney MacDonald signed a memorandum of understanding in early May, saying the two levels of government would cooperate to finish construction of the Nova Centre by 2013.

Chamber president Valerie Payn says: “The proposed convention centre has been studied to death and debated past the point of usefulness. Haligonians are sick and tired of losing out on great opportunities because we can’t get complete consensus. With a community as diverse as this one you will never get complete consensus on anything.

“The benefits of this new convention centre will be threefold,” she continued. “Job creation for our people, growth for our economy and tax revenues for our provincial government. Economic benefits aside, these meetings, functions conventions, concerts and other community functions are important contributing factors to our community’s prosperity and pleasure.
