UBM postpones Tokyo exhibitions

JAPAN - United Business Media (UBM) has cancelled several Tokyo tradeshows following the series of disasters that struck the country in early March.

The events, primarily in the medical sector, include MedTec Japan, the Tokyo Health Industry Show and CPhI Japan, which is co-located with ICSE Japan, P-MEC Japan and BioPh Japan.

MedTec Japan, originally due to take place on 20-21 April 2011, will now run on 29-30 June 2011. The exhibition's event manager Hayato Ishihara acknowledged that in the current crisis, many of the potential delegates and exhibitors would better serve the Japanese medical industry elsewhere.

“We have taken into account that the medical industry in Japan is responding to the emergency, and needs to be allowed and encouraged to do so without distraction,” he said in a statement.

Writing on the CPhI website, UBM Japan MD Christopher Eve and MD of UBMi BV Global Ingredients Division Nik Rudge said: “In making this decision we have taken into account the uncertain condition of the Fukushima nuclear power plant, continued aftershocks in Tokyo, and the inability of many overseas exhibitors and visitors to travel to Tokyo because of the travel advisories and reduced flights.

"Faced with such issues we do not believe we could deliver an international exhibition that would adequately meet the needs of our exhibitors and visitors.”

CPhI Japan, ICSE Japan, P-MEC Japan and BioPh Japan will next take place from 21 to 23 March 2012. CPhI was scheduled for 18-20 April this year at the Tokyo Big Sight exhibition centre.

Unreliable power supply at Tokyo Big Sight forced the cancellation of all the venue’s exhibitions throughout March, including UBM’s Tokyo Health Industry Show, which will now run from 7 to 9 June 2011.
