Posidonia shipping expo opens in Athens

GREECE – The world’s largest worldwide shipping exhibition opened its doors this week in Athens.

The 22nd Posidonia, which runs until 11 June, brings 1,855 exhibitors from 87 countries and expects to draw around 17,000 trade visitors.

The exhibition, spread across 31,000spm, is being used as a platform for Greece to present an optimistic attitude in light of its economic troubles.

“Historically, the shipping sector has been a leader in Greece’s growth and development,” said Greek prime minister George Papanderou. “Today, in this critical period that demands the engagement of all creative forces towards a common goal, shipping can also contribute dynamically to overcome the crisis and to create a better and fairer Greece.”

Greece has the world’s largest merchant fleet, which accounts for 15 per cent of total world tonnage capacity.
