Hurricane expos open as storm season begins

USA – As hurricane season kicks off, hurricane preparedness exhibitions are popping up across the Atlantic United States.

In South Carolina, Myrtle Beach Hurricane Preparedness Conference and Expo, takes place at the Myrtle Beach Convention Centre Hotel on Monday 1 June with the theme “HurrICANe Survival.”

Polk, Charlotte and Orange counties in Florida each hosted a hurricane expo, where visitors could stock up on safety equipment, information and insurance advice.

Speaking at the Polk County Hurricane Expo, meteorologist Brian McClure says: “Florida is a really hard state in which to predict the weather. You have two coasts, tropical air coming in and sea breezes.”

Hurricane season in the Atlantic runs from 1 June to 30 November. Weather forecasters are predicting a heavier-than-usual season this year, with forecasters predicting 18 named storms. Of these, 10 are expected to be hurricanes, five of which are predicted to develop into major hurricanes.
