Venue developer asks Ottawa for funding

CANADA - The sole bidder on a project to build new exhibition space in Ottawa has asked the city to contribute around a quarter of the construction costs and guarantee the rent on the facility for several decades.

Shenkman Corporation, which hopes to build a 218,000sqm exhibition space with more than 2,000 parking spaces near the city’s airport, has asked the city to provide CDN$8.5m of the $39.2m project cost.

The company also hopes to include a 90-suite hotel in the development.

Redevelopment plans would force exhibitions to move out of the current exhibition space at the Aberdeen Pavilion, Civic Centre and Coliseum at Lansdowne Park. City staff want the new trade-show space to open no later than March 2012.
