Protestors storm Computex opening

TAIWAN – Protestors gathered at the opening of Taiwan’s Computex trade show to voice their criticisms of exhibitors including Apple and Foxconn Electronics.

About 30 protestors wielded placards depicting Apple founder Steve Jobs and other IT executives, speaking out against factory working conditions.

Demonstration leader Liu Nien-yun told reporters: “All the products on display at the exhibition are made with workers’ sweat and blood. That’s why we’re here.”

Ten workers at a Foxconn plant in the Chinese city of Shenzen allegedly committed suicide this year by jumping to their deaths.

Foxcomm chief Terry Gou defied protestors, saying his firm plans to give its staff a 20 per cent pay rise. Foxconn employs more than 800,000 people worldwide.
