Marriott to be fined $123m for data breach

US hotel group Marriott International is to be fined £99.2m ($123m), reports the BBC.

The fine is a result of a data breach which was exposed in 2018 that saw 339m guests’ having had their personal details leaked.

The incident is thought to date back to 2014 but was only discovered in 2018.

It comes in the same week as British Airways has been fined £183m over a similar breach.

The EU's General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) came into force on 25 May last year.
