German exhibition centres to invest €1bn by 2023

AUMA, the association of the German trade fair industry, says that more than €1bn will be invested in replacing, renovating and modernising exhibition halls in Germany between 2019 and 2023.

German exhibition centres of national significance had 2,795,311sqm of hall space at the start of 2019, which was approximately 1.4% less than in the year before.

The drop, it would appear, has prompted them to invest heavily in modernising existing halls or replacing old halls.

The findings come from an AUMA survey in early 2019. It covered 25 exhibition centres which had held at least one exhibition classified by AUMA as national or international.

AUMA said the report put the decrease in hall space down to some capacities being discontinued and also construction work.

In 2018, more than €400m were invested in Germany’s major exhibition centres and hall capacities are expected to increase by 29,387sqm by 2023 (+1%), with 22,558sqm coming online in the course of 2019. The €1bn investment will also go towards expanding digital infrastructures.

Germany currently has a total 3.2m sqm of hall space for exhibitions, according to AUMA.
