Paul Byrom, managing director of Upper Street Events, has been elected as the new chair of the Association of Event Organisers (AEO). Montgomery’s Damion Angus will take over Byrom’s previous role as vice chair.

The announcement comes ahead of the association’s AGM, which is taking place in Brighton today and tomorrow (8-9 September).

“We are very fortunate at AEO to have such a strong council governing the association,” said Chris Skeith, chief executive of AEO. “Paul and Damion bring entrepreneurial spirit and a wealth of experience in developing commercial event businesses across consumer and trade sectors which will be invaluable in developing AEO activities throughout this coming year.

“As outgoing chair, we would like to pass on our appreciation to Simon Kimble, who has done an excellent job for the association during the past year. We are in a stronger position to develop the AEO, offering further value to members and having a voice with Government which is a great legacy from his time in post.”

On accepting the role of chair, Byrom commented: “The team at the AEO is very focused on providing maximum value to the membership. The depth of support we have in the various working groups has never been greater and so I am excited to be in a strong position to support these activities through my tenure. I am also looking forward to developing one or two new initiatives for members under each of the Insight, Community, Talent and Representation pillars that will enable all the people working in the member companies to benefit further from AEO activities.”
