The UFI Congress in Milan, held at Milano Congressi, has kicked off with a session from futurologist professor Vito di Bari.

In his session this morning, titled The World in 2030, Bari summarised the history of technology and how it has led to dramatic change in society, causing companies that fail to anticipate adaptations to die out.

A significant change for exhibitions, according to Bari, will come from the Internet of Things, drones and 3D printing.

"Sensors, connectivity and nano-technology will together bring about a new revolution, but having the human touch will put your company ahead of the competition," he added.

He predicted significant shifts in exhibition models, with magazine editors being sought to curate events and technology providers helping realise event visions.

Drones, he predicted, will be used to deliver exhibition furniture and products, which will often be 3D printed to bespoke requirements.

Elsewhere, creative augmented reality ideas discussed included rendering historical figures in 3D to appear above venues, providing information to delegates in an entertaining manner.
