Bins and post boxes removed from Toronto core for G20

CANADA – The City of Toronto is removing tram and bus shelters, rubbish bins and newspaper boxes around where the G20 is to take place.

Approximately 750 newspaper boxes and 200 litter bins are being removed to prevent them from being used as projectiles by violent protestors during the G20 summit from 26 to 27 June.

Also to be removed over the coming week are 29 tram and bus shelters and five tourist information pillars.

City spokesman Kevin Sack says: “It is not unusual for this kind of measure to be put in place to ensure the safety of everyone during a time when we expect a heavier than normal number of pedestrians. We want to ensure a very safe G20 experience for everyone.”

He added that the city is also considering removing bicycle rings from the city centre.
