Collaboration and innovation has seen Melbourne secure the world’s largest public transport event, the Union International des Transports Publics (UITP) Global Public Transport Summit 2021.

Expected to deliver A$9.4m (US$7.1m) in economic contribution for Victoria, the four-day event will see 2,000 international delegates meet at the Melbourne Convention and Exhibition Centre (MCEC), 6–9 June.

The Summit is dedicated to sustainable mobility and will provide opportunities to network, develop partnerships and establish new projects investment.

With the state currently undergoing a $30bn investment in transforming Melbourne transport network, the city – also home to the world’s largest tram network – is well positioned to host such an event.

Melbourne beat Moscow and Hamburg to secure the Summit.

Victorian minister for Tourism and Major Events, John Eren, said: “With the biggest infrastructure pipeline in the country – this Summit belongs in Victoria.”

“Our MCEC expansion will continue to bring more [business events] to our state – strengthening our economy and creating Victorian jobs,” added Eren.

MCB CEO, Karen Bolinger said: “Melbourne has a global reputation for collaboration with federal, local and state governments, as well as city-wide partners working together to successfully secure and deliver conferences.

“This collaborative approach sets us apart, cementing Melbourne’s status as a premier business events destination.”

MCEC chief executive, Peter King commented: “Our venue is more than just a place for hosting meetings and conferences, we’re a hub within Melbourne, where people can gather to share and exchange knowledge and ideas.

“Our connection with our city is what sets us apart,” added King.

Through a partnership with Victorian State Government, Business Events Australia, Transport for Victoria and Public Transport Victoria – City of Melbourne, the MCEC, and Melbourne Convention Bureau (MCB) steered the proposal to secure the event for Melbourne. Tourism Australia supported the bid to bring the UITP Global Public Transport Summit 2021 to Melbourne.
