The Telegraph has today announced the appointment of Ruth Carter as managing director of its events business.

Carter will lead The Telegraph’s vast portfolio of award-winning live consumer and business events which span a range of topics and showcase new ideas, expertise and technology. She replaces Damian Norman who leaves the business after five years.

With significant experience in launching and growing highly successful global exhibitions and events businesses, Carter  will lead the growth and strategic development of the Telegraph’s existing events business, and oversee organic launches and acquisition plans.

Carter has nearly 20 years industry experience and has been responsible for events across a wide range of sectors. She was founder and chief executive officer of UBM Conferences, a division of UBM plc, where she led its expansion in Europe and the US, as well as establishing operations in China, India and Brazil.

Carter joined UBM from EMAP where she was managing director of EMAP Conferences, a business she successfully launched and grew during her seven year tenure.

The Telegraph’s continued investment in its events business is part of its ongoing commitment to lead change within the UK media industry. The company has successfully evolved into a multi-platform digital news brand that continues to deliver the highest-quality journalism. As well as events, the business is also successfully diversifying into travel and financial services to cater for the needs of The Telegraph’s discerning audience.

Nick Hugh, CEO, The Telegraph, said: “The breadth of knowledge, expertise and experience that Ruth brings to this role further strengthens and reinforces our position at the forefront of live events. A powerful and integral part of our brand, events allow us to build lasting relationships with customers, showcase quality journalism and deliver real value to clients.

“I would also like to thank Damian for his contribution to Telegraph Events and wish him well for the future.”

Carter said: “I’m delighted to be joining The Telegraph and leading its events business at such an exciting time. Together with the very talented team of events professionals already in place at The Telegraph, we have a tremendous opportunity to grow and expand the business and take it to the next level.”
