Reed to launch Chinese edition of Oceanology International

ASIA - Reed Exhibitions is taking its UK-based biennial marine and ocean science and technology show brand, Oceanology International, into China next year.

The inaugural Oceanology International China will be held from 3 to 5 September 2013 at Shanghai’s Intex venue and is being endorsed by the Chinese Society of Oceanography Ocean Observation Technology Branch. The organiser claims the event will be the only forum in Asia to bring industry, academia and government together to share knowledge and improve strategies for measuring, protecting and operating in the ocean.

Content planned for the debut includes a full conference programme covering new technology and service developments, and how these cater to the different parts of the oceanological community.

“We are developing Oceanology International China 2013 with government and industry associations,” Reed Exhibitions event director James Coleman said. “China’s rapidly growing offshore energy and margin industry are reason enough to hold this new event and companies are already reserving their space in order to capitalise on this growth. Importantly too, the state government is committed to thoroughly exploring the country’s vast marine potential.”

By way of example, Coleman pointed to China’s most recent five-year plan – the 12th five-year plan – which was the first ever to include a dedicated chapter on marine development. It also claims to have secured several key exhibitors including Marine, Marine Electronics, Valeport, iXblue and Wildlife Acoustics.

To help illustrate China and the region’s potential, Reed has put together a fact sheet outlining the country’s marine science status, as well as Shanghai’s academia, research and commercial development.

“China is firmly established among the ranks as a preferred partner for nations wishing to conduct joint oceanography expeditions,” Reed Exhibitions China senior vice-president Edwin Tan added.

Earlier this week, Reed highlighted the role of second-tier cities in its Chinese expansion plans.
