Comic Con hits San Diego limits

USA - Tension continues in San Diego as local businesses wait to hear if the San Diego Comic Con International will move to a new city boasting better venue offers.

This year the pop-culture event drew around 140,000 visitors to the area. According to Joe Terzi, president and CEO of the San Diego Convention and Visitors Bureau, the show has a US$193m economic impact, including $25m in retail income, $40m in restaurant revenue and transportation and direct spending alone totalling almost $100m.

With the show having reached its maximum size in the existing San Diego venue, both Las Vegas and Anaheim are jostling to lure the huge event away from its home.

The city hopes to retain the convention with proposals to cap hotel rates for visitors, and by expanding the venue.
