Shanghai Expo visitor numbers surpass 2m

CHINA – The Shanghai World Expo this week broke the 2m visitor number milestone.

Organisers are expecting a surge in visitor numbers, as 500,000 free tickets due to expire at the end of the month have yet to be used.

Deputy director of the Expo Operation Headquarters, Zhang Qing, says about 2.2m people had received free Expo gift packs for June from the Shanghai government, and more than a quarter of the tickets have not been redeemed.

The announcement follows claims that early visitor numbers had fallen well below organisers’ expectations.
