Wireless association hangs up on San Francisco event

USA – American wireless association CTIA is taking its annual show to a new city in response to a new cellphone radiation law passed by the San Francisco board of supervisors.

The decision to uproot CTIA Wireless from the Moscone Centre West after this year’s show in October will deprive San Francisco of around 68,000 attendees and US$80m in economic activity, according to the association.

“The board of supervisors’ action has led us to decide to relocate our show,” said CTIA spokesman John Walls in a statement. ”We have already been contacted by several other cities that are eager to work with us and understand the benefits that wireless technology and our show can provide their area.”

The new San Franciscan law requires retailers to display the amount of radiation emitted by the cellphones they sell, a measure introduced amid mounting concerns over the health effects of prolonged exposure to the low-level radiation. However, CTIA insists that cellphones are safe to use, and that the new law will confuse consumers.
