Makati City vice-mayor to target meetings market

PHILIPPINES - Once dubbed the financial capital of the Philippines, Makati City, has launched a campaign “to re-establish itself as a major destination for meetings, incentives, conferences and exhibitions”.

Makati vice-mayor Ernesto S. Mercado said that the city, one of the municipalities that make up Metro Manila, is aiming for a larger slice of the business tourism market.

“Makati City is still the country’s main business travel hub because it is where most multinational companies and banks are based,” the vice-mayor said. “But we want to get a bigger slice of the lucrative meetings and events market.”

Mercado is currently running for the top post and is keen to create a Makati Visitors and Convention Bureau and says he wants the city to “spearhead” Philippine tourism’s bid for business tourism, not least by using technology.
