Councillor proposes Ottawa CC visitor surcharges

CANADA - Visitors to the new Ottawa Convention Centre could face a surcharge on food, drinks or parking, if an Ottawa City councillor’s plan is put into action.

Cllr Marianne Wilkinson has suggested the surcharges to help gain back some of the CD$40m borrowed by the city to fund construction of the new downtown venue, which will currently take 25 years to pay off.

With interest, the loan is expected to cost taxpayers $72.5m.

President of the convention centre, Pat Kelly, says the surcharge would make the venue less competitive.
