Organiser wins legal battle against 'parasite'

FRANCE – Organiser Reed Midem has won €100,000 in damages from a property services firm that took an unofficial stand on the doorstep of its Mipim property event.

France’s Tribunal de Commerce de Paris ordered UK firm Drivers Jonas to pay the damages after finding the hiring of the Pavillon Croisette café in Cannes to conduct business during the four-day event last year constituted an unofficial exhibition stand.

The property firm used the café, located outside the official Palais des Festivals event venue, to conduct business similar to that taking place inside the venue.

“We welcome the fact that the Tribunal de Commerce de Paris has decided that it is not legal to exhibit and conduct business at Mipim outside the Palais des Festivals venue,” said a spokesman for Reed Midem.

“While this judgment vindicates Reed Midem’s decision to go to court, it primarily protects our Mipim clients who register and operate in good faith within the show venue. It was with reluctance that we took action against Drivers Jonas, following unsuccessful efforts to reach an amicable agreement.”
